My favorite game I have yet to even come close to finishing (Horizon Forbidden West doesn’t count) is Remedy’s Control. It’s such an amazing combination of solid gameplay, brilliant storytelling, and just plain fucked-upedness that I kind of don’t want to finish it - I just want to play around in that world indefinitely.
Before making Control, Quantum Break, and Alan Wake, Remedy brought us the Max Payne games. Mixing a film noir aesthetic with gritty realism and throwing in the first instance of Bullet Time used in a video game (don’t fact check that - I didn’t), these games are absolutely iconic. Rockstar Games bought the rights to the franchise and released Max Payne 3 in 2012. The developers of Grand Theft Auto kept Remedy on as consultants for the game.
Less than an hour ago, Remedy posted this bit of awesomeness on Twitter.
How awesome is that? So awesome, that’s how awesome.
While all of the Max Payne titles are fantastic, the presentation of the first two games is definitely a product of their time. Released during the PlayStation 2/OG Xbox era of consoles, the games are still playable, but they don’t exactly hold up. Meanwhile, Remedy has proven itself both competent and innovative when it comes to 3rd person action games. It’s going to be fascinating to see this version of Remedy’s take on their old property.
Rather than two releases, Remedy will be merging the two titles into one game. It will be released on PS5, the Xboxes, and PC.
As the press release says, “The project is currently in the concept development stage. “
Let’s talk about it in the comments.
